Simple Syrup

Simple syrup also known as bar syrup or sugar syrup is a liquid sweetener that is primarily used as a substitute for raw sugar. It is made from sugar and water that has been boiled into a syrup. You can make it plain or infuse it with other flavors.
OMG! >.<

Making your own simple syrup is more economical than buying it at the store. [ Have you seen the prices?!?!?! ] The great thing is you can make as small or as large a batch as you wish and store it in the refrigerator in a well sealed bottle for around 6 months!
I make some to use mainly in iced tea but it can also be used to sweeten mint juleps or other alcohol based drinks, in fruit salad, as well as a soaking liquid for in between layers of cake.

Cook Time: 5 minutes

Total Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 parts sugar
  • 1 part water

Preparation:

  1. Bring the water to a boil.
  2. Dissolve the sugar into the boiling water, stirring constantly.
  3. Once the sugar is dissolved completely, remove the pan from the heat. (Note: Do not allow the syrup to boil for too long or the syrup will be too thick.)
  4. Allow to cool completely and thicken, then bottle.

Demerara Syrup:
Replacing white sugar with Demerara sugar (a raw sugar) is a popular alternative because it has a richer sugary flavor. Another option is to use turbinado or brown sugars. [ The darker the sugar the darker the syrup ]

Flavor-infused simple syrups:
Simple syrup can also be infused with flavor and used in a variety of cocktails to add a
unique twist.
Other flavors:
  • Mint
  • Lemon
  • Basil
  • Citrus
  • Rosemary
  • Etc.

Cook till sugar dissolves. I add Vanilla Bean for flavor.

Perfect for adding a little sweetness to iced tea.
They make great gifts too!
